Functional Neurological Disorders

Functional Neurological Disorders

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition caused by irritation of the tendons around the outside of the elbow. It’s not limited to athletes — anyone with repetitive arm or wrist use can experience it. At Sydney Neuro & Integrative Health, we look beyond the elbow joint to see how nerve pathways, muscle recruitment, and biomechanics may be contributing. Advanced neurological assessments allow us to pinpoint imbalances, so treatment is focused on restoring healthy movement and reducing pain.

Functional Neurological disorders are relatively common, representing approximately 16% of all cases referred to general neurology clinics. Despite their prevalence, FND has historically received limited attention in both research and the development of specialized clinical services. This condition can affect individuals across all demographics but is more frequently diagnosed in women and adolescents.

The underlying biological processes responsible for FND are not yet fully understood. The disorder involves a disruption in how the nervous system operates, resulting in a wide range of neurological symptoms. These may include motor issues such as weakness, involuntary movements, dystonia, or paralysis; sensory disturbances like numbness or unusual sensations; and episodes resembling seizures that are not caused by epilepsy.

Current thinking suggests that FND may stem from abnormal patterns in the brain’s processing and integration of sensory and motor signals. Developments in neuroimaging have begun to shed light on alterations in brain activity, connectivity between brain regions, and even structural changes that may contribute to the condition.

Sydney Neuro & Integrative Health provides customized neurological and physical rehabilitation programs designed specifically for individuals diagnosed with functional neurological disorder (FND).
